lol what are these insane audio formats.

OK so I'm about to make audio engineers cry really hard but I'm exposing my secret. All of the synths are Surge XT, and they're usually basic, just a triangle where I change or sometimes LFO the width. There's a bunch of them. I send them all to a bus. That bus is where the magic happens. Ableton's glue compressor with aggressive settings to squash it all together, dimension expander with size at 0 and dry wet up for width, KHS Chorus and Ableton's ensemble for depth, OTT to squash the result, EQ3 to remove some of the harsh lows that happen because of that, Saturator to distort all of the different elements together so the high melody line kinda get some of the texture of the bass, disperser to shift the phases so it sounds watery, then hybrid reverb for the reverb swells, and then an EQ8 at the end to clean it all up. And this is the part where things get sad. The mix bus. OTT with the depth very low, soothe 2 to clean up some of the harsh freqs because I was lazy, and then my secret, freeclip. Drop it on the mix bus, then increase it until you hear it distort, then dial it back just a little bit to taste. And there you go you have made a monster.

Something important to note, most of the giant sound is the mix. Get the mix to sound good, and then destroy it afterwards. If your mix is off, no amount of compression, distortion and phase stuff will get it to sound good. Crap in, crap out.

Um I said triangle, but I really meant square. Not triangle. And I can't edit the comment to fix that mistake. My bad

Honestly I think most of us when we make music have some batshit in sane mixing techniques, especially for demos. I'm not an audio engineer, I don't know how to make shit sound good by the book, so I just go by ear. Sometimes this results in some wild in-sane out of this world FX chains which are better left in the depths of hell but hay, if it works it works.

Great work, this reminds me of some of vr's things! I think a lot of us could really benefit from your expertise if you would consider making more tutorials, particularly around complex sound design and mixing. There isn't enough accessible material in this area, and experimentation is difficult and sometimes dishearting at first. Is that something you might do in the future?
