What does it mean when that beep, I'm guessing your health meter starts swooping down, like instead of an on off beep it does woop woop woop. Is that an indicator of getting yer ass kicked?

I'm guessing the beep you were hearing was the range beacon, which beeps at the enemy's position to tell you they are in range of your weapon. It has that decreasing slide when they are behind you, and the pitch of the beep reflects their health, the lower it is the lower health they have.
