    didn't realise that such a successful game can use mods

      They were obviously heavily used in Amiga games in the late 80s / early 90s, but did enjoy some popularity in the mid to late 90s on the PC platform as well, when disk space was still at a premium, but even basic PCs could be expected to have sample playback capabilities (Sound Blaster or compatible, Intel AC97), rather than just music synthesis of the FM or wave-table varieties.

      At least, I believe so. I haven't exactly done research into this. 😛
